board statement on issues at delaney hall detention facility

May 27, 2026 - Newark, NJ - “The Essex County Board of County Commissioners joins Governor Sherrill, Senator Kim, and Reps. McIver, Mejia, Menendez, Pallone, and Pou in calling for the closure of the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark. Detained individuals, most of which have never been convicted of a crime, must receive a bond hearing in accordance with their constitutionally protected right to due process.

For months, the Board of County Commissioners has demanded answers from DHS on the conditions in Delaney Hall, but received no responses. The facility is operating illegally and unconstitutionally, and must be closed. We are a nation of laws and rights that must be enforced universally, or else they are no laws at all.”
